For U.S. passport holders

Up to one year visa-free.

U.S. citizens can visit Albania without a visa for up to one year from their first entry, according to the U.S. Department of State. This gives you time to explore Albania before deciding on a longer-term plan.

If you plan to work, study or stay beyond one year, the State Department says you must apply for a residence permit. Check the requirements for your plans before relying on the visitor allowance.

Planning ahead

Residency starts with your reason for staying.

Albania has different residence and unique-permit categories. Your work, family circumstances and purpose of stay help determine which questions to explore. A permitted visit, a residence permit and permission to work are separate matters.

These are starting points for a professional conversation, not an assessment of your eligibility.

Employment

For people considering work with an employer in Albania. The employment arrangement and relevant unique-permit requirements need to be assessed.

Clarify: Who employs you, where you work and what role you will perform.

Self-employment & business

A separate path to explore when you plan to work for yourself or operate a business in Albania.

Clarify: Your business activity and the work you will actually do. Registering a company alone is not an eligibility assessment.

Remote work

The digital mobile worker category may be relevant to work performed remotely for an employer or clients outside Albania.

Clarify: Your employment or client arrangements. Remote income does not by itself establish permission to stay or work.

Retirement

A residence category for pensioners, with specific evidence and conditions.

Clarify: Whether your income is a pension or another source. Investment income and pension income should not be treated as interchangeable.

Family reunification

A path to explore for qualifying family relationships, with conditions relating to the applicant and the family member in Albania.

Clarify: The relationship and the family member’s citizenship or residence status.

Property ownership

Albania provides a residence category connected to ownership of immovable property.

Clarify: The ownership arrangement and your family’s circumstances. A property purchase should not be treated as automatic approval.

Overview checked 7 October 2026 against the Albanian Ministry of Interior’s residence and unique-permit guidance. Categories also include study and other purposes. Confirm current rules and your own circumstances with a licensed professional.
